What Is The Endocrine System?

The Human Endocrine System

The human endocrine system consists of a number of glands, which release hormones to control many different functions.

When the hormones leave the glands, they enter the bloodstream and are transported to organs and tissues in every part of the body.

Our endocrine system is made up of a series of glands that produce hormones to regulate our body’s internal functions, such as our growth and development, metabolism, reproduction, mood, and sleep. Some organs, such as the kidneys, liver, and heart, have auxiliary endocrine functions that help the endocrine system.

Endocrine Glands

It’s It Important?

The endocrine system consists of several glands, all in different parts of the body, that secrete hormones directly into the blood rather than into a duct system. Therefore, endocrine glands are regarded as ductless glands. Hormones have many different functions and modes of action; one hormone may have several effects on different target organs, and, conversely, one target organ may be affected by more than one hormone.

What does an endocrinologist do?

For most part we treat diseases which are related to hormones. Either too much or too little. An endocrinologist is also a general physician (internist). The types of patients we see daily would be quite different. It can be quite challenging because we see a wide variety of illnesses and often you cannot predict what the next patient who comes through the door may have. Some examples of the conditions we see are listed below.

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Thyroid dysfunction and cancers
  • Obesity
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sexual function and reproduction
